Primera P11 starting issue
#1
Hi,

Got a problem with the Primera, the car just won't start when turning the key in the ignition. The car will start perfectly if it is bump started, lifting the clutch in gear, and once running I checked the battery voltage which showed 14.4volts which seems to show the alternator and the battery are ok. When I turn the key, there is just a click and nothing more, so I'm assuming it's the starter motor. I went to TarvikeTori today and they said there are 2 different starter motors for the '99 Primera P11 1.6 karvalakki, talviauto malli. Anyone know which one is the most used, or has changed it before and bought a replacement? Orr does anyone have a part number?

Cheers

Have you also tried to start with starting cables? Your battery might still be dead although you have 14 volts when running. Have you measured how much there is voltage when not running?

Indeed sounds more like a battery problem. You could go to your nearest car mechanic shop and ask them to do battery test on it.

Although battery testing equipment aren`t always 100% right. While at the mech` shop you could ask if you can try starting the car with battery booster.

The battery had 12.x when not running. I'll bump start it and visit AkkuTalo tomorrow or somewhere similar and see what they say. A battery will be a lot better than the hassle of changing the starter motor.

I'll let you know.

Started the car and went to AkkuTalo, which of course was closed being that it was Saturday and it would make more sense to be open when other people aren't at work.. Oh well.. Then went to the local car repair shop, where the helpful guy checked the battery which reported all was well and we even tried the booster which didn't help. Then he tried hitting the starter motor as I turned the key, which didn't help either. So, it looks like it's the starter motor, and since there are 2 of them to choose from, I couldn't be bothered anymore to fix it myself and just booked a time Smile Easy... I just have no idea as to which starter motor it is without pulling it out, and then I would have to go and buy it and then fit it afterwards. Too much hassle as my repair place is 40kms away.

Anyway, thanks for the help, I appreciate it. Strange how I even miss the Primera now, been driving an Opel whilst waiting for it to be fixed and I cannot get used to the pedals on that thing, they should be aligned, but the accelerator is on a different level to the rest. Think I'll get winter tyres for the Skyline next year Smile

Indeed hard to pull off heel n` toe with the pedals the way they are. Tongue Funny that it was the starter motor. Guess you can`t win every time.

It might also be the bottom of your ignition switch.

You should have tested the startter by bypass wire directly from the battery (or any 12v suply) to the initiation pivot of the starter.. if still no go then its broken for sure.

Autokeskus could have helped also, they can see (with registration number for example) which starter your car has.

EXSR20DE: Madallettu (1,4mm) ja portattu kansi, venttiilit muotoiltu, Z-lastu, Piper NISPB285R nokat, säädettävät nokkapyörät, Martelius putkisto, pakosarja ja decat. SuperSprintin pönttö, Apex, kevennetty vauhtipyörä. = Ei se silti mihinkään kulje Wink

A good idea, but it's going for fixing tomorrow. I'm a bit annoyed for not fixing it myself, but with 2 little kids, there's no time to do anything Smile I'll ask them about that tomorrow when I take the car, so they don't do extra work for nothing.
